  Personal Auto

Personal Auto coverage consists of Bodily Injury, Property Damage, Uninsured Motorist, Personal Injury Protection, Medical Payments, Comprehensive, Collision, Towing and Rental coverage. There is a little variation in the definition of these terms from company to company. Companies may offer higher limits of coverage but the basic definitions read very much alike.

  • Bodily Injury covers the injury you cause to someone.
  • Property Damage covers the damage you do to someone’s property.
  • Uninsured Motoristscovers you if you are injured by another person and that person has no insurance or has lower limits that you are entitled to receive.
  • Personal Injury Protection covers you and your passengers' injuries. (Personal Injury Protection may be known by other terms in states other than New York.)
  • Medical Payments cover you and your passengers' injuries when the personal injury coverage exclusion is triggered. This can also act as an excess limit of coverage if your personal injury protection is exhausted.
  • Comprehensivecovers all damage to the car except damage caused by collision.
  • Collisioncovers damage caused by contact with another vehicle or property.
  • Towing Roadside Assistance covers the cost of having your car towed or repaired at the site of breakdown.
  • Rentalreimbursement covers the cost to rent a car while your car is being repaired due to a covered claim.
Premiums vary among companies depending on the following:
  • where you live
  • use of the car
  • credit score
  • age of drivers
  • years of driving experience
  • driving records
  • age, make, and model of vehicle insured
  • safety features in the car
  • courses (Driver Training, Defensive driver)
  • ratio of cars to drivers
  • if students are away at school over 100 miles

Your credit score is one of the most important components that determine the premium today. Every insurance company's credit score model is different as they are developed “in-house” and there are no standards which they must follow. As a result, premiums can vary tremendously. This is an advantage of shopping for auto insurance with an Independent Agent like the Allan M. Block Agency: we will shop your premiums with many different companies to find the best rate.

Does the type of car I drive affect the rate? Yes, every car is assigned a symbol by the Institute of Highway Safety based on cost, damagability, likelihood of theft, cost to repair, and likelihood of injuries to driver. The cost of your car could be very low, yet its symbol may be much higher than a car twice the price, if other factors outweigh the cost.
