The numbers are in, and 2017 proved to be another busy one at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). During this time, the EEOC resolved 99,109 complaints. Overall, through voluntary resolutions and litigation, the EEOC secured just under $400 million for victims.
The most commonly filed charge was retaliation, accounting for almost half (48.8%) of all charges filed. Other types of complaints and their approximate frequency follow (the total of the percentages exceeds 100% due to some complaints alleging multiple types of discrimination): race (34%); disability (32%); sex (30%); age (22%); national origin (almost 10%); religion (4%); color (almost 4%); equal pay act (1%); genetic information (0.2%).
Steer clear of EEOC complaints and lawsuits by enforcing excellent employment practices at your company. Your insurance agent or broker may be able to help with risk management advice and employment practices liability insurance coverage.
