Opioid use has become a widespread problem in our country. Sadly, many people who abuse prescription opioids get them from the medicine cabinets of friends or family. Leftover medication needs to be promptly disposed of to avoid misuse. However, medicine—especially controlled substances— cannot be thrown in the garbage. So how should you get rid of it?
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has partnered with local law enforcement for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 27. This event, and others like it, gives Americans the opportunity to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of expired or unused medication safely. The most recent event of this kind, held in April 2018, collected approximately 475 tons of medications from 6,000 locations across the country.
