Before you head out on vacation, be sure your return home will be a happy occasion.
If your summer travel will last for more than 30 days, or if you’re a beach bum headed to the shore for the season, review your homeowners insurance policy with your independent agent. The typical policy does not cover vacant homes, and the term “vacant” is defined differently across insurance companies. A house sitter or a vacancy permit may be required for your protection.
Beyond insurance provisions, take some risk-prevention steps as well.
- Turn water off at the main valve.
- Stop delivery of packages, mail and newspaper.
- Set air conditioning at 80 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit – high enough to save energy, but low enough to prevent mold.
- Set water heater to “vacation” mode.
- Unplug idle appliances. If you empty the freezer or refrigerator, leave their doors open to prevent mold.
- Set lights on timers to mimic an occupied home.
