Protecting your Best Friend is Important

vet-pet-insurance-m.original

As with most expenses in life, veterinary bills increase a bit more every year. Advances in medicine also mean that an injury or sickness that twenty years ago would have us saying a tearful goodbye to our friend, can now be addressed – if we can afford it.

Sometimes we see hints that something is wrong, but other times the news can come hard and fast.

I’ll share a story involving my cat. She’s 10 now, but when she turned 8, out of nowhere she suddenly started making multiple quick trips to the litter box. After two days, we took her to see her vet and our suspicions were confirmed that she had an infection. That, we were prepared for. What we weren’t prepared for was when her vet gave her a full exam, and found a “mass” on one of her gums.

“It might be cancer, it might be nothing. If we don’t test, we won’t know.”

Those words hit me like an express train. Of course, I would pay for the test! Out came the credit card and four days later, thankfully, her tests came back negative. The total cost of that visit was $775, including medicine for the infection that brought us in the front door to begin with.

Imagine if the test had come out with different results. Surgery, boarding, follow-up visits. This could have cost thousands. Thousands which, if I didn’t have, could have led to an unbearable decision.

Pet health insurance, by contrast, costs far less. Some policies are available for just a few dollars a month. Opponents of buying this coverage always give the same argument: “I had a [dog/cat] that lived for [12+] years and never had anything happen to them! Think of how much money I’d have wasted!” The information in brackets varies, but the line is usually about the same.

I have only one question to ask you in response:

If we’re talking about keeping your best friend in your life, or potentially losing them forever – or having to sacrifice your savings to avoid a painful decision. Do you really want to take the chance?
