Water/sewer backup insurance coverage is for damage caused when a drain, sewer, or sump pump fails or backs up into your property. It covers the costs associated with damages to your building and its contents. This coverage is not always automatically included in your policy. Some insurance policies have an exclusion for such water backup losses, so check for specific exclusions on your policy. Cleanup alone from one of these incidents is very costly, and if you have an exclusion, these expenses and content losses won’t be insured. Remember that flood insurance is different from water/sewer backup coverage. If the cause of a loss is due to flooding or groundwater, then a flood policy would need to be in place for you to have coverage.
