If you haven’t finished your holiday shopping yet — or possibly, like me, haven’t even started it — then I would like to suggest a challenge.
Forget about Internet shopping. Put down your credit card and phone. Close the browser window that’s open to Amazon and the like. Put on some boots and coat but don’t go to the mall. Go instead, for a walk. Head to the main street of your town or city, where glowing shop windows are decorated and lit up for the season.
Grab a cup of hot cider from an independent coffee or tea shop and let it warm your hands and relax, because remember this is supposed to be fun, not stressful. Step into a store and take a moment to look around. Tell the staff person what you are looking for, many times they can point out a great idea you might never notice.
Shopping at independent retailers helps strengthen our local economy, expands employment, fosters community, and provides a more relaxed, fun, and rewarding shopping experience. This holiday season you should feel satisfied that you are supporting your local community and take the pledge to shop local!
